Dearest Gretchen,
Of the tiny litter of pups, it was your playful little bark that made us pick you to take home with us. Your energy was so big for such a little puppy. How could we have known of your heart condition? When we did find out a year later, we were so very much in love with you, that our only course of action was to take exceptional care of you, which we did. Knowing that you wouldn't live long only made us love you more. Until the very end, we knew you loved us as much as we loved you. You were this family's very first dog and, my God, you stole our love so easily.
Now as your heart is at rest, ours are broken by the sadness of not having you here with us. Never shall a day pass without us thinking about you and the absolute joy your brought our family, of which you were a very important part. You, a dog, have single-handedly taught me and my family the true meaning of unconditional love.
