Volunteer Opportunities

Meet some of our wonderful volunteers!

Helping with our Dogs
The HART dog program has dogs in foster homes, boarded at local vets and at our kennel. The greatest volunteer needs are in the following areas:

  • Dog Adoption Days - The weekly Dog Adoption Days are the best opportunity for our dogs to meet their new owner and find their forever home! We need volunteers who can attend an Adoption Day and hold a dog on a leash for the event. The more volunteers we have - the more dogs that have the possibility of finding their forever home! It only takes a few hours of your time and it makes a huge difference in a dog's life! We have adoption events each weekend - please see our Adoption Days Schedule . The Volunteer Instructions for Dog Adoption Events  page provides additional details on the events. Petco requires that volunteers attending the Adoption Days be 18 or older. Most of our Adoption Days are at Petco. Occasionally we attend special events like the Reston Pet Fiesta, where we welcome volunteers over the age of 16, and under the age of 16 if accompanied by an adult over the age of 18 for the entire event (one adult per child). Please understand that this is for the safety of our dogs and volunteers. There are many other great ways that volunteers under the age of 18 can help HART! Please review Volunteers Under Age 18 and learn about all the wonderful ways you can help our dogs!

  • Fostering dogs and puppies - Please see Foster Program  for more information on fostering.

To volunteer for the dog program, please complete a Volunteer Profile.

If you are not able to volunteer at Adoption Days or Foster a dog but would like information on how to provide additional assistance, please email Moira. Someone will contact you soon to coordinate your much appreciated help with our dog program!!

Helping with our Cats

  • Staffing Adoption Days - see our Adoption Days Schedule
  • Cleaning cages at Petsmart
  • Fostering cats and kittens - Please see Foster Program for more information on fostering.
  • Bottle feeding kittens
  • Transporting cats to our vets
  • Assisting with cat adoptions
  • Cat adoption follow-ups

The cat program asks that volunteers under 16 be accompanied by an adult. To volunteer for the cat program, please complete a Volunteer Profile or email Kim.

Kids helping HART Dogs and Cats
There are many special kids under the age of 18 who would like to help the HART dogs and cats and we welcome your assistance! Please review Volunteers Under Age 18 to learn about all the great ways you can help our dogs and cats!

Fundraising Events
Throughout the year HART organizes several events to raise money to save more dogs and cats, including our annual Art and Silent Auction. If you can help in organizing future events, please complete a Volunteer Profile. The more money we make, the more animals are helped!

Gathering Silent Auction Items
Every year there are three HART fundraisers that involve gathering items to raise money: the silent auction at the Holiday Party in the early winter, the silent auction at the spring Art Auction, and the HART yard sale. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to keep your eyes open year-round for items and solicitation ideas for the silent auctions. Details and contact info.

Volunteers' Assumption of Risk
Because volunteers are considered to "assume the risk" of any injury stemming from their volunteer undertakings, HART cannot buy insurance for injuries incurred by volunteers during HART events and activities. In the event of an injury, volunteers must look to their personal insurance for applicable compensation.
