When Darcy came to the shelter in S.C. she was completely shut down and was only about 8 to 10 months old. Fortunately, this shelter worked very hard to give her time and space to get acclimated and she has made tremendous progress. They saw how special Darcy is! They kept her in the office at the shelter instead of a run, so she got used to people. It was clear immediately that she loved other dogs and cats (there were usually 2 to 3 cats in the office with her as well!) and enjoyed it when some stayed in the office with her. She really seeks the companionship of other dogs. She is now in a foster home and she wants to play with the other dogs which is wonderful to see. She is still reserved with her foster parents but is starting to come around. She will likely continue to be nervous in new situations and with new people, but she does adjust. Darcey will need another outgoing and playful dog(s) in the home to give her confidence (dogs learn by watching other dogs). Given that she is scared, her home will need to be fenced. She is sweet with people but given her nervousness we think she would be better in a home with older children (12 and up) because younger children's higher energy might scare her some. If you are looking for another dog who will be a playful companion to your own dog(s) please let us know.
