Helping with our Dogs The HART dog program has dogs in foster homes, boarded at
local vets and at our kennel. The greatest volunteer needs are in the following
areas:
-
Dog Adoption Days - The weekly Dog Adoption Days are the best opportunity
for our dogs to meet their new owner and find their forever home! We need
volunteers who can attend an Adoption Day and hold a dog on a leash for the
event. The more volunteers we have - the more dogs that have the possibility of
finding their forever home! It only takes a few hours of your time and it makes
a huge difference in a dog's life! We have adoption events each weekend - please
see our
Adoption Days Schedule
. The
Volunteer Instructions for Dog Adoption Events
page provides additional details on the events.
HART requires that volunteers be at least 18 years old to hold a dog.
Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times (one adult per volunteer) and are welcome to talk to potential adopters about the dog, spend time with and pet the dog, etc. At no time may the underage volunteer hold the dog.
While most of our Adoption Days are at Pet Supplies Plus and Petsmart, occasionally we attend special events like the Reston Pet Fiesta, where
we welcome volunteers over the age of 16, and under the age of 16 if accompanied
by an adult over the age of 18 for the entire event (one adult per child).
Please understand that this is for the safety of our dogs and volunteers. There
are many other great ways that volunteers under the age of 18 can help HART!
Please review Volunteers Under Age 18 and learn about all the wonderful ways you
can help our dogs!

Gathering Silent Auction Items Every year there are three HART fundraisers that involve gathering items to raise money: the silent auction at the Holiday Party in the early winter, the silent auction at the spring Art Auction, and the HART yard sale. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to keep your eyes open year-round for items and solicitation ideas for the silent auctions. Details and contact info.

Volunteers' Assumption of Risk Because volunteers are considered to
"assume the risk" of any injury stemming from their volunteer undertakings, HART
cannot buy insurance for injuries incurred by volunteers during HART events and
activities. In the event of an injury, volunteers must look to their personal
insurance for applicable compensation.
